Potassium

An essential electrolyte mineral — the inside-the-cell partner to sodium

All articles checked for accuracy against the GB NHC Register and all sources have citations with verified links to their relevant studies.

Potassium is the main positive ion inside cells, balancing sodium and enabling the electrical signals that underlie nerve and muscle activity. It is an essential electrolyte mineral obtained from food and included in WellsparQ products in modest, regulated amounts.

This article explains what potassium is, where it is found in the diet, how much guidance bodies recommend, how WellsparQ formulates with it, and the regulatory context for claims. It summarises key functions, dietary sources, typical intake targets, product levels, and safety considerations.

Potassium is the mineral that works from the inside. Where sodium sits mainly in the fluid around our cells, potassium is the dominant positive ion within them — and the constant, careful traffic of the two across the cell membrane is what lets nerves fire and muscles move ¹². It is an essential electrolyte: needed every day, obtained from food, and not something the body can make. At WellsparQ it is one of the three electrolyte minerals in the hydration and recovery formulas — declared, as the factsheet card puts it, as "the third of the three electrolyte minerals".

What potassium does

Potassium's roles are electrical and osmotic ¹²:

  • Nerve signals and muscle contraction — the potassium–sodium gradient across cell membranes generates the electrical impulses that run nerves and muscle, including the heart.
  • Fluid and electrolyte balance — as the main intracellular cation, potassium balances sodium and helps set the body's water distribution.
  • Blood pressure — potassium works against the pressure-raising effect of high sodium; this sodium–potassium interplay is central to public-health advice.

Most people in Western countries eat too much sodium and too little potassium, which is why national and international bodies encourage more potassium-rich foods rather than less ²³.

Where we get it, and how much

Potassium is spread widely through whole plant foods: fruit and vegetables (bananas are the cliché, but potatoes, leafy greens, beans, lentils, dried fruit and avocado are all rich), plus dairy and fish ¹².

The gap between the everyday target (around 3,500 mg) and typical intakes is the crux of the public-health message. In supplements, potassium is deliberately used in modest amounts — UK rules limit how much potassium a food supplement may deliver per daily dose — which is why the WellsparQ figures below are small relative to the dietary target ¹.

The higher figures belong to the Lunch meal replacements, where a substantial potassium content simply reflects a complete meal; the hydration and recovery formulas use smaller, electrolyte-scale amounts. In Hydryonic Complex the source is potassium chloride, a standard electrolyte salt. As an inorganic mineral, potassium carries no animal-derived concern; the formulas follow the brand's usual vegan, kosher and halal standard.

The evidence around potassium and blood pressure

The strongest research theme is the sodium–potassium–blood-pressure relationship. A meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials in the Journal of Hypertension (2015) examined daily potassium intake and the sodium-to-potassium ratio in relation to blood pressure, and the WHO guideline (2012) reviewed the evidence when recommending increased potassium intake in adults ³. This is population and clinical nutrition research. For a food supplement it must be handled with care: potassium is an authorised nutrient, but only in specific authorised wording and at qualifying doses. We present the research as evidence, not as a WellsparQ product claim.

Safety and sensible use

From food, high potassium is not a concern for healthy people with normal kidneys — the body excretes the surplus ². From supplements and salts, more caution applies: excess potassium (hyperkalaemia) can be dangerous, especially for people with kidney disease or those taking medicines that raise potassium (some blood-pressure drugs, potassium-sparing diuretics) ¹². This is precisely why UK supplement doses are kept low. Anyone with kidney problems or on such medication should speak to a GP or pharmacist before using potassium supplements or salt substitutes.

Where it fits

Potassium is the quiet electrolyte that does its work inside the cell — the partner to sodium in every nerve impulse and muscle movement. In the WellsparQ range it is a declared, sensibly modest part of the hydration, recovery and meal formulas. It's a lifestyle.
