Vitamin B6
Pyridoxine — the amino-acid vitamin, and the one B vitamin with a real upper limit
All articles checked for accuracy against the GB NHC Register and all sources have citations with verified links to their relevant studies.
Vitamin B6 is a versatile B vitamin with a clear regulatory place — and a genuine upper limit you should know about. WellsparQ labels its products precisely and flags higher doses so customers can take them safely.
This article explains what vitamin B6 is, how it works biochemically, which authorised nutrient claims may be used in the UK/EU, typical food sources and labelling values, and why B6’s tolerable upper intake level matters for supplement dosing. It also lists where B6 appears across the WellsparQ range and how the brand handles higher-strength products.

Vitamin B6 is a workhorse. Its active form is a coenzyme for well over a hundred enzyme reactions, most of them to do with proteins and amino acids, which is why it turns up in so many everyday formulas. It is also an authorised vitamin, so it is one where we can state a contribution plainly, in cleared wording. But B6 carries one distinction the other water-soluble B vitamins do not: it has a genuine, fairly low safety ceiling for long-term supplemental intake. That makes honest dosing and clear intake notes especially important — and it is exactly how WellsparQ handles it.
What B6 does
"Vitamin B6" covers several related compounds — pyridoxine, pyridoxal and pyridoxamine — that the body converts into the active coenzyme pyridoxal 5'-phosphate (PLP) ¹. PLP is involved in more than 100 enzyme reactions, the majority concerned with amino-acid and protein metabolism, as well as the release of glucose from glycogen, the formation of neurotransmitters, haemoglobin synthesis and homocysteine metabolism ¹². This breadth is why B6 status touches so many systems — described here as nutrition science, not as a promise from any product.
Authorised claims — what B6 may say
Vitamin B6 is an authorised vitamin under retained EU Regulation 432/2012. WellsparQ's approved set (claims.json) includes the following, to be used in exact wording:
| Authorised claim (verbatim) |
|---|
| "Vitamin B6 contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism." |
| "Vitamin B6 contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue." |
| "Vitamin B6 contributes to normal psychological function and the normal functioning of the nervous system." |
| "Vitamin B6 and B12 contribute to normal psychological function and the normal functioning of the nervous system." |
| "Vitamin B6 and zinc contribute to the normal function of the immune system." |
| "Magnesium and vitamin B6 contribute to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue." |
The paired claims (with B12, with zinc, with magnesium) may only be used where the product actually delivers the partner nutrient at a claim-bearing level. Each claim needs a significant amount of B6 — at least 15% of the 1.4 mg NRV per portion (0.21 mg) — a threshold every listed product meets ³⁴.
How much, and from where
The Nutrient Reference Value used on European labels is 1.4 mg ⁴. Good plant-forward sources include chickpeas and other legumes, potatoes, bananas, fortified cereals, nuts and seeds ¹⁵.
| Measure | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| EU labelling NRV | 1.4 mg/day | ⁴ |
| Active coenzyme | Pyridoxal 5'-phosphate (PLP) | ¹ |
| EFSA Tolerable Upper Intake Level (revised 2023) | 12 mg/day, adults | ⁶ |
The safety ceiling — read this before dosing copy
Unlike most water-soluble vitamins, B6 has a real upper limit. Very high supplemental intakes taken over a long period can cause a sensory peripheral neuropathy — tingling, numbness or unsteadiness — which typically improves when intake stops ¹²⁷. On reviewing the evidence, EFSA lowered the adult Tolerable Upper Intake Level to 12 mg per day in 2023 ⁶. The NHS separately advises that taking 10 mg or less a day from supplements is unlikely to cause harm, and cautions against high doses over long periods ⁵.
Several WellsparQ formulas deliberately provide B6 above the NRV, and some approach or exceed the newer upper level per serving — for example Electro levels at 24 mg, Glucomannan Complex at 10 mg and Red Clover Blend at 5 mg. The factsheet cards for these flag an intake note rather than bury it, which is the right instinct: these are products to keep to the stated serving and not to stack casually with other B6-containing supplements.
Where B6 appears in the WellsparQ range
B6 is one of the most widely used nutrients in the range, from trace label entries to deliberately higher single-nutrient levels.
| WellsparQ product | Declared B6 | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Electro levels | 24 mg | Highest; keep to serving |
| Glucomannan Complex | 10 mg | Intake note applies |
| Red Clover Blend | 5 mg (357% NRV) | Above reference value |
| EveningCalm / RedBerry / CalmaRoot | 2 mg (~143% NRV) | |
| ImmunoDefence Pro | 1.5 mg (107% NRV) | Paired-claim potential with zinc |
| VitaralDaily365 / Vanilla Lunch | 1.4 mg (100% NRV) | |
| VitaBright Gummies | 0.5 mg (36% NRV) | Per gummy |
| Acai Moringa Caps / TurmericRoot Complex | 0.21 mg (15% NRV) | Meets claim threshold |

Where it fits your day
B6 is a genuine everyday essential and, being authorised, one we can describe honestly and briefly. It is also the B vitamin that most rewards restraint — worth having covered, not worth piling up. In the WellsparQ range it is declared to the milligram, with intake notes where the dose warrants them, so the higher-strength formulas are used as intended: once a day, to the serving, no stacking. Anyone pregnant, breastfeeding or taking other supplements or medicines should check their total B6 with a GP or pharmacist.
