Soy Protein

Soy Protein Isolate · the plant-protein backbone of the shake

All articles checked for accuracy against the GB NHC Register and all sources have citations with verified links to their relevant studies.

Soy protein isolate is the concentrated, neutral-tasting powder that makes our meal shakes deliver substantial protein from a plant source. This article explains how isolate is made, why its protein quality is well regarded, and what we can and cannot say about it under UK rules.

This piece covers what soy protein isolate is, how it is produced, its position on protein-quality scales, and how WellsparQ uses it in our meal-shake range. It also clarifies regulatory boundaries on claims and notes allergen labelling and isoflavone content.

Soy protein is the workhorse of plant-based nutrition — a complete protein from a legume, refined into a neutral, high-purity powder. In WellsparQ's meal and shake formats it is not a supporting extra but the structural backbone: the first ingredient on the label and the reason a scoop delivers the protein it does. This piece explains what it is, why its protein quality is well regarded, and — importantly — what the rules allow us to say.

From bean to isolate

Soy protein comes from the soybean, Glycine max, a legume domesticated in East Asia and now one of the world's major crops. Making a soy protein isolate (SPI) means removing most of the bean's oil and carbohydrate, leaving a powder that is around 90% protein by dry weight — the most refined of the common soy protein forms (flour and concentrate being less processed).

WellsparQ specifies non-GM soy. Two points of quality follow from this: the protein is highly concentrated, and it is a complete protein — it supplies all nine essential amino acids in useful proportions, which is not true of every plant protein.

Protein quality — what the science says

Protein quality is judged by digestibility and amino-acid profile. On the modern PDCAAS and DIAAS scales, isolated soy protein scores highly — a PDCAAS at or near the maximum of 1.0 — placing it among the best plant proteins and close to some animal proteins ¹. This is a compositional fact about the ingredient, well established in the nutrition literature.

Soy protein has also been studied for wider effects. A classic 2006 meta-analysis in the American Journal of Cardiology pooled trials of soy protein and serum lipids ²; a 2021 systematic review in Nutrients examined soy protein containing isoflavones and lipid profile in postmenopausal women ³; and a 2023 review in the British Journal of Nutrition looked at whey and soy protein supplementation and inflammatory markers in older adults ⁴. These are reported here as the research record — who studied what — not as claims for the WellsparQ product.

How WellsparQ uses it

Soy protein isolate is the base of the meal-shake range.

Choco Lunch71.3 g protein per 100 g"The first ingredient on the label and the reason a 25 g scoop carries 17.8 g of protein"
Vanilla Lunch18 g protein per 25 g scoop"72% of the powder is protein — the entire backbone of the shake"

Allergen note: soy is one of the 14 major allergens that must be declared under UK law. It is clearly labelled on-pack, and anyone with a soy allergy should not use these products.

A word on isoflavones

Soybeans naturally contain isoflavones (see the separate Soya Isoflavones piece). Protein isolates are processed in ways that remove much of the isoflavone content, though residual amounts remain. WellsparQ keeps the protein and isoflavone stories separate, and makes no hormonal claim of any kind.
