Vitamin B5 (Pantothenic Acid)

The coenzyme A vitamin — named for being everywhere

All articles checked for accuracy against the GB NHC Register and all sources have citations with verified links to their relevant studies.

Pantothenic acid — vitamin B5 — is literally named for being everywhere. It helps make coenzyme A, a molecule nearly all cells use, so the vitamin quietly supports many basic processes.

This article explains what vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid) does, the authorised claims permitted on labels, typical dietary sources, how much is used in WellsparQ products and the regulatory position on benefits for non-nutrient ingredients. It clarifies what we may and may not say about this vitamin in product copy.

Pantothenic acid takes its name from the Greek pantothen, meaning "from everywhere" — a fair description of a vitamin found across so much of what we eat. That ubiquity is no accident. Vitamin B5 is the building block of coenzyme A, one of the most heavily used molecules in the whole of metabolism, which means nearly every cell needs a steady supply. It is also an authorised vitamin, so it is one of the ingredients where WellsparQ can speak plainly, in approved wording. It appears across several formulas, declared to the milligram.

What pantothenic acid does

The body uses pantothenic acid to make coenzyme A (CoA) and acyl carrier protein ¹. Coenzyme A is central to the release of energy from fats, carbohydrates and proteins, and to the synthesis of fatty acids, cholesterol and certain hormones and neurotransmitters ¹². Because CoA is required at so many metabolic steps, pantothenic acid is a genuine everyday essential — quietly involved rather than dramatically felt.

Authorised claims — what B5 may say

Pantothenic acid is an authorised vitamin under retained EU Regulation 432/2012. WellsparQ's approved claim set (claims.json) includes:

Authorised claim (verbatim)
"Pantothenic acid contributes to normal mental performance."
"Niacin and pantothenic acid contribute to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue."

The paired claim may be used only where the product also delivers niacin at a claim-bearing level. Both claims require a significant amount of pantothenic acid — at least 15% of the 6 mg NRV per portion (0.9 mg) — which the formulas below meet ³⁴.

How much, and from where

The Nutrient Reference Value used on European labels is 6 mg ⁴. True deficiency is rare precisely because the vitamin is so widespread ¹. Good plant-forward sources include wholegrains, legumes, mushrooms, avocado, seeds and vegetables such as broccoli and potatoes ¹⁵.

Safety

Pantothenic acid has an excellent safety record. It is water-soluble, readily excreted and has very low toxicity; EFSA did not set a Tolerable Upper Intake Level, and very high intakes have at most been linked to mild digestive upset ¹⁶. Even the highest WellsparQ entry (EveningCalm Blend at 50 mg) sits well within a benign range. As always, anyone pregnant, breastfeeding or on medication should check with a GP or pharmacist.

Where it fits your day

Pantothenic acid is the definition of a background nutrient — needed by nearly every cell, present in nearly every wholefood, and rarely thought about because it usually just works. Being an authorised vitamin, it is also one we can describe plainly, in cleared wording, without stretching a word. In the WellsparQ range it plays that quiet, dependable part across daily, calm and blend formulas.
